Veneers

HomeVeneers

Dental veneers are tooth-colored shells that attach to the front of teeth to improve their appearance. Veneers are used as a form of cosmetic dentistry to treat chipped, broken, discolored, or aesthetically imperfect teeth.

Dental veneers are thin coverings made from porcelain or resin-composite materials permanently bonded to your teeth as a cosmetic treatment. These are commonly used for the front eight teeth for cosmetic appeal.

We offer dental veneers as a cosmetic dentistry option at Bettendorf Family Dental. Our dentists will transparently advise on veneers and other cosmetic options.

Veneer Materials

Veneers are thin, custom-made shells designed to cover the front surface of teeth. These can be crafted from porcelain.

Porcelain: These veneers are popular for their durability and natural appearance. They are made from a high-quality ceramic material that mimics the translucency of natural teeth. Porcelain veneers are resistant to stains and can last for many years with proper care. They often correct issues like gaps, chips, or severe discoloration.

Why to Get Veneers

Veneers are an excellent option for improving the appearance of your smile, and addressing issues like discolored, chipped, misaligned, or irregularly shaped teeth. Veneers are bonded to the front of the teeth, transforming their color, shape, size, or length. This cosmetic solution offers durability and a natural look, making it a popular choice for those looking to enhance their smile.

Veneers are used to treat:

  • Broken teeth
  • Chipped teeth
  • Severe discoloration
  • Uneven coloring
  • Teeth gaps

The Veneer Procedure

The veneer procedure will take multiple appointments.

Consultation

The veneer process starts with a consultation appointment with your dentist to discuss the veneer treatment and determine if this option is right for you.

Your dentist may take X-rays and evaluate the health of your teeth. You may not be a safe candidate for veneers if you have some dental conditions. If your teeth are crooked or uneven, you may need braces or an aligner before your dentist can properly place the veneers.

Once you and your dentist determine that you would like to do veneers, you will schedule the next appointment.

First appointment

Your dentist will start by taking a mold or impression of your teeth during your first appointment. To do this, they must trim down part of your teeth using grinding.

The mold will then be sent to a lab. Your veneers will take up to two weeks to return from the lab.

Second appointment

Your dentist will evaluate the veneers’ fit, shape, and aesthetic to ensure they offer the cosmetic benefit you are looking for.

In most cases, you won’t need an anesthetic.

The dentist will then thoroughly clean your teeth and use a grinding tool to create a rougher texture on each tooth on which a veneer is going. Your dentist then uses dental cement to bond the veneer to the tooth.

This second appointment typically takes one or two hours.

Follow-up

Regular follow-up during your routine exams and cleanings can help ensure the veneer is properly cared for.

Caring for Veneers

Veneers have a straightforward recovery process and provide beauty and function for years to come.

Once the veneers are cemented, you can eat and chew within hours. If you used an anesthetic during the treatment, be aware and careful during this time. It’s normal for veneers to feel rough. These rough spots will wear down after several days of normal eating and teeth brushing.

Veneers can last anywhere from 5-20 years, depending on the type of veneer you got and how well you take care of them.

Here are some best practices:

  • Don’t chew on hard objects
  • Don’t use your teeth to open packaging
  • Use your back teeth to chew.
  • Wear a mouthguard during sports.
  • Avoid grinding your teeth.

How do I choose between veneers, crowns, and implants?

Veneers, dental implants, and crowns are all different. Veneers cover the tooth’s front surface, while crowns cover the entire tooth. Veneers are also much thinner than crowns and require a less invasive procedure. Implants are placed in the bone to replace a missing tooth, and then a crown is placed on the body of the implant, which is called an abutment. An implant may take four to six months to integrate into your bone before it can be restored.. While these procedures can be confusing, our dentists are equipped to learn about your oral goals and recommend the right treatment for you. Contact us today to learn more.
