Dental Exams & Cleanings

HomeDental Exams & Cleanings

Routine dental exams and cleanings are the core of preventive dentistry. You can get ahead of many dental issues before they become serious by receiving both an exam and cleaning in the same visit every six months, which maximizes your time and keeps your oral health on track. This standard visit leaves you feeling fresh and confident and assures you that you are thoroughly evaluated for any risks. Early detection and treatment allow you the time to make decisions to protect your oral health.

Bettendorf Family Dental provides both dental exams and screenings as a form of preventive dentistry.

Our clinic also offers restorative and cosmetic dentistry.

Dental Exams

During each visit, our dentist performs a complete exam. This exam is intended to catch any issues early and inform a treatment plan, whether through restorative or cosmetic dentistry. This exam can also provide information about what types of preventive measures you can take.

Oral exam:

Our dentists provide a thorough oral exam to ensure your mouth and teeth are at optimum health, and catch potential dental issues before they become more serious.

Dental X-rays:

X-rays can help provide an objective data point for dentists to diagnose or find oral conditions and diseases early.

Intra-oral pictures:

These pictures are used to monitor changes over time and visually record any findings, and are very helpful for patient education.

Cancer screenings:

Early detection through visual examination and regular screenings is crucial for improving the prognosis and treatment outcomes of oral cancer.

Discussion with the dentist:

You will be able to discuss any concerns you have and allow the dentist to guide any treatment recommendations. This discussion will allow you and your dentist to personally address any conditions or concerns that you may have.

Dental Cleanings

Dental cleanings are usually performed by one of our hygienists. During the cleaning, they will:

Remove plaque and tartar:

Your dental hygienist uses precise dental tools to remove plaque and tartar around the gum line of your teeth. This part of your dental visit is necessary to maintain your oral health, especially to reduce inflammation around the gums and preserve bone health.

Flossing and rinsing:

This flossing will provide a deep clean that you may not be able to get to on your own. A rinsing will clear your mouth of any debris.

High-powered cleaning:

The hygienist will use high-powered brushes and tools to thoroughly clean and polish your teeth.

Fluoride treatment:

This treatment will fight against cavities for many months. It will use a concentrated gel that will bind to your teeth to help strengthen the enamel and prevent cavity formation.

Daily Hygiene and Maintenance

While our dentists and hygienists provide routine cleanings, much of your oral health is determined by your habits and routine.

Here are best practices to maintain your oral health and make your dental visit enjoyable:

  • Regular Brushing: Brushing your teeth at least twice daily with fluoride toothpaste to remove plaque and bacteria.
  • Flossing: Daily flossing is essential to clean between teeth where a toothbrush can’t reach.
  • Mouthwash: Use an antimicrobial or fluoride mouthwash to help reduce plaque and freshen your breath.
  • Healthy Diet: Limit sugary and acidic foods and drinks to reduce the risk of tooth decay.
  • Hydration: Drinking water helps rinse away food particles and bacteria, and restores neutral pH.
  • Don’t smoke or use tobacco: Avoid tobacco products, which can significantly increase your oral cancer risk. Tobacco products also contribute to gum disease and compromise overall oral health.

Visiting your team at Bettendorf Family Dental for your cleaning and exam every six months can help ensure that your oral hygiene routine is on track.
